Momentum works two ways: both positive and negative.
We all know how easy it is to get "into a rut" when things go bad—a string of bad luck, a lost job, a broken relationship, or someone talking behind your back. It can feel like it’ll never end.
So, we look for ways to motivate ourselves to escape it. We seek out inspirational stories and videos. We read about people who’ve overcome the odds. We visualize what life will look like on the other side.
This is all positive and necessary. We must "pull" ourselves out of the funk.
But on the flip side, we must also do the same when momentum is going in the right direction.
You’d think positive momentum would be a good thing—something to strive for. And it is, certainly more desirable than negative momentum. However, steps must be taken to ensure pride doesn’t creep in.
A win after a win after a win can feel good. But the downside is that you may not take the time for self-reflection. When times are good, humans tend to rest on their laurels. Doing so, however, opens the door for pride to work its way in.
And pride almost always precedes the fall.
When you fall, at least make it involuntary.
